The Animation Process: From Brief to Final Frames
How a purposeful animation moves through goals, storyboards, design, motion tests, sound, and final delivery.
By Rixlab Agency
Animation can explain an idea, guide attention, or give a brand a recognizable way to move. The work begins by deciding what the viewer should understand or feel. A clear process helps the team avoid adding movement that looks impressive but weakens the message.
LOCK EARLY
Approve the message, script, storyboard, and visual direction.
REFINE LATER
Use motion reviews to improve timing, transitions, sound, and polish.
Define the job and audience
Write down where the animation will appear, who will see it, and the action or understanding it should create. Decide the length, format, and delivery requirements early. A short social clip, product interaction, and brand film require different levels of detail and pacing.
Write a simple story
Turn the goal into a beginning, a useful progression, and a clear ending. Draft the key message before visual effects. Storyboards show the sequence of scenes and help stakeholders agree on what each moment needs to communicate.
Design the motion language
Choose typography, color, illustration, transitions, and timing that fit the brand. Create a few style frames and a short motion test before building every scene. Consider how movement supports hierarchy and accessibility, including moments when reduced motion may be appropriate.
Animate, review, and deliver
Build the sequence, add sound where it improves meaning, and review on the devices and platforms where it will play. Check text legibility, pacing, audio levels, and export settings. Deliver the agreed formats and source files needed for future updates.
“Animation moves faster when the story is settled before detailed frames are produced.”
Motion should make the message clearer
Rixlab treats motion as part of a wider brand and digital experience. A useful animation leaves people with a stronger understanding of the idea, not only a memorable effect.
