The UI/UX Design Process: Research, Flows, Prototypes, and Testing

A practical look at how research, user flows, wireframes, prototypes, visual design, and testing fit together in a UI/UX project.

UI/UX design begins by understanding what people are trying to do. The interface should be shaped by the task, the context, and the business goal. A deliberate process helps teams find problems early and make the finished experience easier to learn.

RESEARCH

Observe the task, the context, and the points where people hesitate.

VALIDATE

Test a prototype with realistic tasks before investing in full production.

Research the task and context

Identify the people who will use the product, their goals, and the obstacles they face today. Review existing data and speak with users where possible. Define the key tasks and success criteria so the team can evaluate designs against real needs.

Map flows before screens

Draw the steps a person takes to complete an important task. Look for unnecessary choices, unclear transitions, and missing information. A flow can reveal structural problems before any polished interface is made. Agree on what the product should ask for and when.

Wireframe and prototype

Create simple layouts that show hierarchy and interaction. Turn the most important path into a prototype and ask representative users to complete a task without coaching. Observe where they pause or misunderstand. Revise the structure before moving into detailed visual design.

Design, test, and hand off

Apply typography, color, components, states, and accessible interaction patterns. Document how the design behaves across screen sizes and error conditions. Test the final flow again, then work with developers to preserve the intent during implementation. Continue learning from usage after release.

“A polished screen cannot rescue a flow that asks people to solve the wrong problem.”

A useful interface is a tested interface

Rixlab connects UX research, flows, interface design, and prototypes so visual decisions support what users need to accomplish. The result should feel clear as well as polished.
